Married To Be Alone Essay examples - 842 Words

Married To Be Alone? Although marriage is the symbol of two lives ¡Ã‚ ¦ union, in the real world many people experience it in the opposite way. Gloria Steinem says:  ¡Ã‚ §The surest way to be alone is to get married. ¡Ã‚ ¨ In  ¡Ã‚ §The Story of an Hour ¡Ã‚ ¨ by Kate Chopin, we can certainly realize how well the author describes the loneliness of a marriage. There is another short story that also reflects the same point of view in a relationship; it is William Faulkner ¡Ã‚ ¦s  ¡Ã‚ §A Rose for Emily. ¡Ã‚ ¨ Both works serve as strong evidence for Gloria Steinem ¡Ã‚ ¦s opinion. In  ¡Ã‚ §The Story of an Hour ¡Ã‚ ¨ Chopin implies an idea of that Mrs. Mallard lives as a prisoner. Maybe it is because she grew up in a society in which women used to be properties of men, she has not noticed†¦show more content†¦This story reflects the society in that age, then Mrs. Mallards represents the housewives in that time. Many of them get married with the man they don ¡Ã‚ ¦t love, and they spend their lives living alone emotionally. In the other side we have another nineteenth century author, William Faulkner, who also wrote a short story about being alone, even his work does not focus that much on marriage. His idea of  ¡Ã‚ §getting married to be alone ¡Ã‚ ¨ is very strong, too. In  ¡Ã‚ §A Rose for Emily ¡Ã‚ ¨, Faulkner interprets loneliness by telling Emily ¡Ã‚ ¦s life. This lady goes through several stages in which no word better than  ¡Ã‚ §alone ¡Ã‚ ¨ can describes, even though, she doesn ¡Ã‚ ¦t want to accept the truth. After her father ¡Ã‚ ¦s death, she kept his body as if he were alive,  ¡Ã‚ §She did that for three days ¡K trying to persuade her to let them dispose of the body ¡Ã‚ ¨. She denied his father ¡Ã‚ ¦s death because she was afraid to be alone, she depended a lot on her father. Then she dated Homer Barron, it was a good chance to extricate herself from the loneliness.  ¡Ã‚ §[People of the town] learned that Miss Emily had been to the jeweler ¡Ã‚ ¦s and ordered a manà ‚ ¡Ã‚ ¦s toilet set in silver, with the letters H.B. on each piece ¡K and [they] said, They are married. ¡Ã‚ ¨ By her acts we can clearly see that Emily really wanted to marry Homer, so she wouldn ¡Ã‚ ¦t be alone any more. But he was a homosexual man, in that time considered as  ¡Ã‚ §not a marrying man ¡Ã‚ ¨. And for her, there is no way she can letShow MoreRelatedSingle Parents in Singapore1164 Words   |  5 Pagesrather than have an abortion. Unfortunately, some do fit the stereotype. “Killings” By Andre Dubus, Is A Journey Story About The

â€Å"Killings† by Andre Dubus, is a journey story about the death of a man and the quest to answer questions about the case. The story opens as Frank s funeral is proceeding. The reader can assume that he was killed because of his interaction with Richard’s wife. Even Though they were technically separated, but not divorced, Richard did not take the news of his legal spouse seeing another man. Richard was a hothead and had a very hard time processing things rationally when his mind is clouded. One night, he saw his wife and children eating dinner with Frank and became irrationally upset then killed Frank by shooting him in the chest. Frank’s family was incredibly upset and also made decisions that would not be made had they taken the†¦show more content†¦No person in the world can say that then do not know that killing human beings is legally and morally wrong. Even Though we know for a fact that Frank’s dad knows killing is a despicable crime, he is so clouded in his thinking that he feels, at that moment, that it is justified. Killing anyone is an extreme task that takes a tragic event to spur an irrational thought or action. You then need mass amounts of stress or discourse for an individual, and Frank’s death is exactly the catalyst in this story that makes the murder justified in Matt’s mind. Death can lead to incredibly clouded thinking processes, which is shown in this short story. No normal person, with a pure thought process would even think about killing an individual. Most of the reactions in Killings, were due to clouded thinking process’. The fact that Ruth, knew that her husband had begun to carry a gun not for his own safety, but for the end goal of killing Richard, again shows that her mind was fogged over with the thought of possibly ,â€Å"unknowingly† , avenging her son s death (Dubus 1132). If she had not had the stress and anxiety that tags along with the death of a loved on and time to think her decisions out, it can be assumed that she would not approve of the choices her husband made. There is also a very good likelihood that

Human Rights Violations In East Timor Essay Example For Students

Human Rights Violations In East Timor Essay HumanRights Violations in East TimorThe Portuguese first colonized the islandof Timor, of which East Timor is part of along with West Timor, in 1520. The next three centuries marked attempts by the Spanish, the Dutch, andthe British to colonize the island. These attempts were successful, but Portuguese sovereignty over East Timor was finalized due to treatiessigned in 1860 and 1893. However, in 1975, political movements and civil war broke out causing so-calleddisappearances, executions, violence, crimes against humanity, and other atrocities. Twenty-five years later, in 1999, atrocities still exist in East Timor. Portugal ruled the colony with a ruthless and brutal regime during the years before WWI. Despite attempts to bring peace to the island by breaking up the local kingdoms, the people did not change their lifestyles. Though people attempted to rebel against Portuguese rule, their attempts were crushed. The Japanese took over the island in 1941. Following the takeover, a small group of Allied troops with support from the natives waged guerilla warfare against the occupiers. While the successes of the Allies were great, over 60,000 natives, almost 13% of their population, lost their lives. ( easttimor.com) After the War, the Portuguese fascist regime ruled the island as before. However, in 1974, the fall of the dictatorship completely changed the mentality on the island. Three main political parties emerged, each having its own goals. The UDT (pro Portugal) and the ASDT (pro Independence) formed a coalition and the ASDT became what is called as Fretilin. The other party, Adopedti (pro Indonesia) had little support in East Timor, but was backed by the military regime of General Suharto in Indonesia. Soon after, the UDT withdrew from the ASDT, and they staged a coup against the ASDT and Fretilin in the capital city of Dili. Fretilin opposed the coup, conquered the UDT forces, and set up their own government. The Indonesian army invaded the town of Batugade in December of 1975, causing more conflict. After the fall of Batugade, Fretilin declared independence, and the Indonesian army invaded Dili on the 7th December. This takeover was violent and the Indonesian Army executed thousands of civilians. More than 10% of the population of Dili were killed in the first four months, with a death toll nearing between 60,000 100,000 lives. ( easttimor.com ) During the invasion of Dili in December 1975, the Indonesian army committed horrible acts towards civilians. Apparently, according to Amnesty International, there are dozens of reports that tell of indiscriminate killings as the soldiers came into Dili. Civilians were rounded up like cattle as most were shot execution style, while others were apparently tied to poles and thrown into the ocean. Estimates of the death toll report that at least 10% of the capitals population was murdered. Once the United States, Europe, and Australia gave backing to Indonesia, any resistance to them was crushed. The atrocities never stopped from there. Entire villages were enclosed and the population was either executed or transported to camps. These camps were like prisons, the people couldnt even grow their own food, which is what they have relied on their entire lives. Thousands of people starved in these camps. Villages were even subjected to chemical weapons that destroyed their crops and poisoned their water. On November of 1991, a massacre by the army of peaceful protesters in Dili was videotaped and broadcast around the world. This massacre soon became known as the Santa Cruz Massacre, after the cemetery where the massacre took place. Ensuing investigations revealed that at least 270 people, most of whom were children, were killed and that many others were imprisoned, tortured, and executed in the following weeks. The Santa Cruz massacre caught the attention of the world and brought up questions of the human rights situation in East Timor. Babe Ruth EssayIn 1993, the UN Human Rights Commission passed a decree condemning Indonesia. After this decree, numerous organizations visited the country and decided that the human rights situation was intolerable. However, these were short-lived and basically accomplished nothing. Since 1991, killings have continued, while harassment, torture, and imprisonment of suspected opponents of Indonesian rule occurs everyday. The last few years have seen a growing amount of tension between the people of East Timor and the thousands of Indonesian migrants living there. These tensions have resulted in occasional outbreaks of violence between the two groups. Within two months ago, according to the East Timor homepage, twelve pregnant East Timorese women, seeking shelter in refugee camps, had their throats .

Antigone Essay Thesis Example For Students

Antigone Essay Thesis ee cummings once said, to be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody elsemeans to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight. That quotation is exemplified in many works of literature, but the opposite is too. No matter what people try to be or not to be, they dont always succeed. For example, in the play, Antigone, by Sophocles, the character, Antigone displays the idea of being her own person, but Creon displays the opposite of that. In the prologue, Antigone tells Ismene that she will do whatever she wants pertaining to their brother, whether or not Ismene agrees and wants to do the same. Antigone tells Ismene, If that is what you think, I should not want you, even if you asked to come. You have made your choice, you can be what you want to be. Antigone displays ee cummings thought. The gods want her to think and act a certain way #61485; their laws #61485; but she has her own belief that her brother, Polyneices, should be buried and his spirit should have the proper life, instead of being punished. Even if he was brave, he should be punished. But Antigone doesnt believe in that. No matter what the consequences, she fights it and does what she thinks is right. Creon, the king of Thebes, exhibits cummings idea. Kings are always supposed to be these big, mighty, terrors that triumph over all and tell their kingdom what to do. Even if Creon did not want to commit someone to demise, he would, because thats what hes supposed to do. Creon may be trying to stray from being everyone else, and be his own person, but hes not succeeding. He is what everyone else wants him to be: a controller over everyone. Creon believes that, this is his command, and you can see the wisdom behind it. As long as he is King, no traitor is going to be honored with the loyal man. But whoever shows by word and deed that he is on the side of the State, he shall his Creons respect while he is living, and his reverence when he is dead (Scene 1, line 38).But he doesnt follow through on that statement. If Creon were to commit someone to his death, he would not give him respect when hes dead. If a citizen were to commit a wrongdoing, Creon would punish them no matter what. The refore, Creon is an example of ee cummings quotation. Clearly, throughout this work, one can see the various ways in which characters act. They may be their own person, or conform to the rest. Some succumb to the pressure of others, some can resist it. The only question is, whos who? Is the character who they appear to be, or are they just one among the rest?English

Rumors Summary Essays - Rumors, Charley, Eighth Doctor

Rumors : Summary Neil Simon's farce, Rumors, gives readers an in-depth look at the lives of ten wealthy individuals attending a dinner party. In an attempt to stay within the social crown, the characters start unsubstantiated rumors about their friends in an attempt to make themselves look better. The hosts of the party, Ken Gorman, and his wife Chris must cover up the fact that a friend of theirs, Charley Brock, has been shot in the ear lobe. They do not know how he got shot, but they decide that he must have tried to commit suicide, and thereby proceed to spread rumors about what they have heard in an attempt to avoid a possible attempted suicide scandal. They first lie to Charley's personal doctor, they lie about what happened to all of the servants, and they finally about a second gunshot heard in the house. When the Gormans first encounter Charley in his bedroom, they immediately call his personal doctor at the theater to tell him that Charley feels just fine. Chris relates the story to the doctor when she says, "Dr. Dudley, I'm afraid there's been an accident_ Well, we just arrived here at Charley's house about ten minutes ago, and as we were getting out of our car, we suddenly heard this enormous_ thud_ It seemed Charley had tripped going up the stairs_ no, wait, down the stairs. Down the stairs. But he's all right," (13). Finally, Chris manages to explain to the doctor that Charley had not really hurt himself in the first place and that she felt sorry to have bothered him at the theater. After hanging up the phone, the Gormans put Charley in the shower to wash off the blood, wrap a towel around his head to stop the bleeding, and go back downstairs to wait for the rest of the party guests. Lenny and Claire Ganz arrive at the party first. Coming straight from a car accident, the Ganz's ask why Charley has not joined them for the party. Ken Gorman explains that Charley has had a rough day and he decided to take a nap for a little while. Lenny exclaims that he has not had a thing to eat since breakfast and wonders where Mai Li the cook has put all of the food. Not wanting to explain that they have recently fired Mai Li, the Gormans fabricate a story about her having to go back to Japan to visit her sick mother. Claire asks, "But Mai Li is Chinese, isn't she?" The Gormans look at each other and then Chris quickly says, "I know. Her mother was visiting Japan." As a result of this, they must ask their friends to help them prepare dinner for their own party. They know that if they explain to the Ganz's that they do not have enough money to keep her in service any longer, they will fall of out favor with their friends. For this reason, they find it necessary to fabricate stories to explain happenings in the house. As the night progresses, they consistently dig themselves into a deeper hole of lies. The situation eventually gets terrible when Ken tries to hide the gun so Charley can't find it to shoot himself again. On his way to putting in the closet, Ken trips over Charley's slippers and discharges the gun straight into the wall. The report occurred right next to his ear, and for the rest of the play, Ken is almost entirely deaf. Naturally, the Gormans cannot say that a gunshot went off in the house, so they create a variety of different excuses to explain the sound upstairs. At first, Claire decides that a car backfiring has the most credibility, but because of the volume of the sound, she later changes it to a manhole cover that exploded. After some time, she again changes the story to a can of shaving cream that exploded due to the pressure from the manhole cover exploding. This story seems a little far-fetched to the other guests, so she finally says, "Oh, I know. I know. I know exactly what it was_ it was a balloon. They've been blowing up party balloons up there all day," (43). This answer seems satisfactory enough for everyone, and they lapse back into their normal conversations again. The party in Rumors has a lot of humor to it, but on the other hand, it shows just how far people will go just to be accepted by their peers. Through deceit, the Gormans lied about Charley's health to avoid an investigation. They lied about their lack

Austria Essays - States Of Austria, Salzburg, Austria, Alps

Austria Essays - States Of Austria, Salzburg, Austria, Alps Austria Austria Austria is the republic in central Europe. It is about 360 miles long and has an area of about 32,378 square miles. Vienna is the countrys capital and largest city. Austria is predominantly a mountainous country, with an average elevation of about 3000 feet. Most of the land falls within the eastern part of the Alps. In general the major mountain ranges of Austria run in an eastern-western direction and are separated from one another by large valleys. The northernmost line of ranges includes the North Tirol Alps and the Salzburg Alps. Among the central range is the Hohe Tauern, which tops in the Grossglockner, the highest elevation in the country. The Pasterze Glacier, one of Europes largest, descends from the Grossglockner peak. The southernmost ranges include the tztal Alps, the Zillertaler Alps, the Carnic Alps, and the Karawanken Mountains. Besides these eastern-western ranges, several series of mountain extend in a northern-southern direction. The mountain barriers of Austria are broken in many places by passes, including the Brenner Pass and the Semmering Pass. The principal river is the Danube, which enters Austria at Passau on the German border. Austrian tributaries of the Danube include the Inn, Traun, Enns, and Ybbs rivers. In the south, important rivers are the Mur and the Mrz. In addition to the rivers, the hydrographic system of the country includes numerous lakes, Bodensee, and Neusiedler Lake in Burgenland. The lake is the countrys lowest elevation point. The Austrian climate varies with altitude. Mountainous regions are subject to moderate Atlantic conditions and experience more precipitation than the eastern lowlands. Spring and fall are usually mild throughout the country. Summers are short with moderate temperatures. Cold and often severe winters last about three months in the valleys. The foehn is important to Austrias agricultural production, allowing for early cultivation of the southern valleys. Average annual temperatures range between about 44 and 48 F throughout the country. Average annual rainfall is about 26 inches in Vienna and about 34 inches in Innsbruck. In some interior valleys, the average annual rainfall is between about 60 and 80 inches. Austria has large deposits of iron ore, lignite, magnesite, petroleum, and natural gas and is a prime world agent of high-grade graphite. Some small deposits of bituminous coal have been mined, as well as lead, zinc, copper, kaolin, gypsum, mica, quartz, salt, bauxite, antimony, and talc. Deciduous trees, mainly beech, oak, and birch, are predominant in the lower altitudes. Spruce, fir, larch, Austrian black pine, and stone pine extend to the timberline. The higher altitudes have a very brief season during which alpine plants, including edelweiss, gentians, primroses, buttercups, and monkshoods, come into brilliant flower. Wildlife is generally scarce in Austria. Chamois, deer, and marmot are still represented; bear, which were once abundant, are now almost completely absent. Hunting is strictly regulated to protect the remaining species. The Austrian people are German-speaking, but the country has a varied ethnic mixturea legacy from the time of the multinational Habsburg Austria. About 96 percent of the population is ethnic Austrian. Minority groups include Croats and Hungarians, Slovenes,Czechs, as well as small numbers of Italians, Serbs, and Romanians. A large amount of refugees in the years following World War II increased their numbers, and new groups, such as the Turks, were added. According to the 1991 census, Austria had a population of 7,795,786. The 1996 estimated population was about 8,023,244, giving the country an overall population density of about 248 people per square mile. About 61 percent of the population is urban, with more than one-quarter of the people living in the five largest cities: Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. Austria is divided into nine federal provinces: Burgenland, Krnten, Niedersterreich, Salzburg, Steiermark , Tirol, Obersterreich, Vienna, and Vorarlberg. Roman Catholicism is the religion of about 78 percent of the population of Austria. Reformed Lutherans and various other Christian denominations account for 8 percent, and Muslims make up 2 percent. Those without a religion or whose faith is unknown constitute 12 percent of the population. German is the official language of Austria. About 2 percent of the population speak languages other than German, mainly Croatian, Slovenian, Czech, and Turkish. The basis of the Austrian educational system is the national law that requires school attendance for all youths between the ages of 6 and 15. Austrias long tradition of free education dates from the Educational Reform Act of 1774, instituted by the Empress Maria Theresa. This law, which was expanded in 1867 and again in 1962, largely accounts for the fact that virtually all
